Installing artificial turf can be a great addition for homeowners in Arizona. Use our step-by-step guide below if you wish to lay the turf as a DIY project.
What Is Artificial Turf?
Artificial turf will resemble a much shorter or more shallow carpet of hairs. It offers less cushioning than real and artificial grass. However, these types of artificial surfaces will be tough enough to withstand heavy foot traffic.
The biggest benefit associated with both artificial grass and turf is that it requires far less care and maintenance compared to real grass.
How To Install Artificial Turf
Follow the ten steps outlined below to successfully install artificial turf on your lawn.
Step 1. Remove Existing Grass
- Start by removing any existing sod or material on the surface prior to laying the turf.
- A sod cutter or shovel will work best for this step.
- The depth of removal should leave enough room for at least 3-4 inches of base material.
- Use PVC fittings to cap off any irrigation lines.
Step 2. Establish A Border
- Install any bender board you wish to line the artificial turf.
- If there is already a border in place, simply replace the sod with the turf.
- Shovel a few inches of the base material onto the area.
- Spread it around and fill the areas where the grass and soil have been removed.
Step 3. Grade The Area
- Grade the area with the use of a plate compactor for large areas.
- A hand tamper could work to pack rocks into position in smaller areas.
- Create a small slope angled away from the home to help with water runoff.
Step 4. Cover The Lawn Area
- Use a weed barrier fabric in order to protect the artificial lawn area from weeds and grass regrowth.
- Try to overlap the seams by 6-12 inches and secure the perimeter of the weed barrier using landscape staples.
- Make sure to staple the seams, as well.
Step 5. Remove Turf Edges
- Next, it’s time to unroll the turf and let the blades relax for two hours.
- Use your utility knife to remove the turf’s selvage edges.
- Flip the turf over to expose the back.
- Count up to three rows from the edge before cutting.
Step 6. Position The Turf
- Put your turf into position, at this time.
- If you must piece the grass, make sure you align the grass in the same direction.
Step 7. Staple Turf In Place
- Use landscape staples and a rubber mallet to hammer the turf into position.
- Along the turf’s perimeter, space your staples about 3-4 inches apart.
- Along the center, space them 12-24 inches apart, and 1-2 inches apart along the seams.
- Try to always use staples instead of nails.
Step 8. Brush The Turf
- Brush your newly installed turf with a power broom, carpet rake, or stiff nylon-bristled broom.
- Do this to massage the grass to stand up.
- Remove any debris that may have built up during the installation process.
Step 9. Apply Filler
- Collect filler, such as silica sand or crumb rubber.
- Use a drop spreader to sprinkle the filler on your turf.
- Use a power broom to even the filler out and keep the turf blades in place.
Step 10. Enjoy Your Artificial Turf
- Once the installation is finalized, it’s time to sit back and enjoy your new lawn.
- The turf should maintain its look for several years without any maintenance needs.
How Long Does Artificial Turf Last?
The long durability of artificial turf means its green color will remain vivid for a long period of time. Artificial turf will not fade in the sun, and it is resistant to wear.
Artificial turf should last at least 20 years. However, not tending to any important maintenance needs could cause the lifespan to decrease. Artificial turf is more low maintenance than natural grass, but a few factors can impact the overall lifespan of your synthetic grass.
Several factors will impact how long your artificial turf ultimately lasts. Some factors, such as usage, you have control over while other natural causes are out of a homeowner’s hands.
